Lasers leave their mark
Lasers for materials processing applications make up about 30% of the $9 billion dollar total laser market, and of that total, the laser marking/engraving industry is roughly about $750 million dollars strong. Although most lasers for marking applications are low-power fiber lasers, high-power and ultrafast fiber lasers are making inroads – especially for hard-to-mark materials like glasses and ceramics. Today’s marking lasers address a myriad of industrial and medical applications using lasers with different wavelengths, pulse durations, and beam profiles to achieve the desired end result. More and more, lasers are selected over toxic inks as the size and cost of these laser tools shrink.
